About seven kilometres south-west of Sydney’s CBD, near Sydney's busy international airport, Marrickville is a suburb of high-density housing which mixes a variety of light industries with commercial and residential buildings. Like many near-city suburbs these days, Marrickville is a diversely-multicultural place where ethnic restaurants and food stores abound and a multitude of languages are spoken on the street. First-time visitors tend to duck their heads a lot around here as the massive jets roar off the tarmac from the airport and make one hell of a racket as they seem to hang suspended waiting for landing clearance or turning on the power as they take off for interstate or international destinations. Road, bus and train services provide direct access to the heart of Sydney and, along with most inner suburbs, Marrickville is slowly but surely becoming more fashionable as younger people move in and set about renovating the small cottages that dominate the streets.
